Simonton started as a series os survey marks owned by Thomas Westall.  Then in the 1840's James Simonton and his family moved to the area and established the plantation on the Brazos river - and the city was therefore named in his honor.  The city grew and grew as a farming community and is now today "The Heart of Texas."

People are now drawn to the banks of the Rio de los Brazos de Dios, as were Thomas Westall and other members of Austin's colony the "Old Three Hundred".
